The Pineapple Diet: A Negative Calorie Fad Diet

The pineapple diet (also known as the pineapple weight diet, pineapple detox diet, or the pineapple juice diet) is a popular fad diet based on the negative calorie diets that are increasingly popular, just like the pineapple diet, which I just mentioned. Now I'm not a doctor, trainer, or anything, but I've heard a lot of good things about the pineapple diet and since I like pineapple I thought I'd write about the pineapple diet and what other people have to say about whether or not the pineapple diet works or if the pineapple diet actually doesn't work.

The pineapple diet is considered a fad diet, and it is true to some respect. One thing about this type of diet and eating plan that that throws a lot of people off is that there isn't a simple laid out eating plan for the pineapple diet the way there is for say, the cabbage soup diet, which is another diet based off of the idea of negative calories. So one person's version of a pineapple diet will be a lot different than a different person's version of this negative calorie diet. This is often true with fad diets, and the pineapple diet is a fad diet, but one that could work really well for some people.

Some people have referred to the pineapple diet as a three day fad diet, while others have said that they've done a eating plan similar to the cabbage soup diet, only with pineapple, and that it worked well. There is also argument over whether you have to have fresh pineapple or if canned pineapple works, and want the actual eating plans are. So I guess in a way there really isn't one pineapple diet, but actually a lot of pineapple diets, plural.

In the three day version, or at least in one three day version of the pineapple diet, you eat nothing but one entire fresh pineapple the first day (and drink a lot of water), on day two you do the same thing but also eat two cans of tuna for protein, and on day three you do the same as day one: just pineapple and lots of water (ice water is said to be better, I guess.)

In addition to a lot of arguments that detractors of this diet have, they point out that a great supplement like an herbal colon cleanse does the same thing as this diet, but is much safer.

This is a fad version of the Metzger pineapple diet, although when Joann Metzger created the pineapple diet, she also used a lot of tablets that contain a special amount of pineapple, and she claimed to lose over 40 pounds of fat in just 6 weeks and kept it off. I don't know if this is true or made up, but I love pineapple so this is great news if it is true!

Another version of the pineapple diet is a three week version where you eat three small sensible meals a day that are low calorie, low fat, and have pineapple as a side, and you have 2-3 snacks a day of pineapple. Pineapple is a negative calorie food, at least it's one of the fruits listed on the negative calorie diet, so that would make sense that this fruit would make a good diet food.

There are many claims about pineapple and pineapple diets that haven't been figured out yet, and there is a lot of criticism that the pineapple diet has no scientific basis and is just a poorly disguised starvation fad diet that will lose weight, but not necessarily fat, and thus might not be very healthy for you at all. But others say they've lost weight, gone to a healthy eating plan after, and kept it off, so in the end who really knows about the pineapple diet or negative calorie foods in general?

Well if you're looking for the truth about negative calorie foods then searching for negative calorie foods and zero calorie diet information online can be really overwhelming. This diet has taken on an online life of its own, and there are many different points of view on it, but the cabbage soup diet is a version of the negative calorie diet, as are many other types of popular trendy diets. Is there a such thing as a "negative calorie?" Well that's hard to figure out, but there are plenty of people who believe this diet works, and it's hard to argue with that many people swearing by it.

Still, it can be hard outside of this blog to find a good review on the negative calorie foods diet, and any time you hear something like top secret fat loss secret diet review, make sure you can find a review to really tell you a non-marketing opinion on that diet plan. When you can find a review (like the one highlighted two lines up) then you're probably in good shape, but always do your homework with any diet, whether it's that one or negative calorie foods, or any other type.

There are many questions, facts, myths, and arguments revolving around the concept of a negative calorie and what exactly the negative calorie foods diet entails. The negative calories diet is not only one of the most popular diet plans of the last couple years, but it's also one of the most controversial diet plans out there. There have been huge arguments over if there is a such thing as a "negative calorie," or if it's all hocus pocus. Adding fuel to the fire are the high and mighty attitudes of some of the people strongly swearing that this diet is a fraud.

The technicalities of what a diet is named or how it scientifically does or doesn't work does not interest me nearly as much as the bottom line of any weight loss plan: does it work? The negative calories diet does work, in part because it calls for the majority of your food to be either fruits or vegetables. This is usually a big improvement on most people's diets, but in addition to that you are kept away from foods like coconuts and potatoes, which are not good for weight loss at all.

A negative calories diet above all else, however, is a supplemental diet. This means you can't only eat the foods on the list and nothing else. If you do this, you will eventually starve to death. This can make the diet tricky. Celery is one of many foods that is on the "Negative Calorie Foods List," and this vegetable is known for its quality dietary qualities, which made it popular even before the celery negative calorie connection was made. Negative Calarie Foods: Is Watermelon a Negative Calorie Food?

A common assumption is that if water is zero calories, then watermelon must be a negative calorie food. While in theory this makes sense, in reality it's not the case. Watermelon has snuck onto several "Negative Calorie Foods Lists," but this is a little bit baffling since it didn't show up on many of the original lists.

While this post is dealing mostly with whether or not watermelon is a negative calorie food, and what foods really are negative calorie fruits and negative calorie veggies, as opposed to the posers. Not knowing the actual lists is what leads many to believe that watermelon is on the list, but they don't thinkg that pineapple and kiwi are negative calorie fruits (they are).

Before there are any angry comments, let's also deal with the many negative calorie myths. Some of the most common myths, or questions, about negative calorie foods and the negative calorie food diet, are:

  1. There are no foods that take more calories to burn than consumer (except maybe, and a big maybe, ice water) - this concept is from a misinterpretation of Calorie, with a "C" versus calorie, with a "c."

  3. The diet still works for losing weight

So how is it that the negative calorie diet works even with #1 and 2 being true? Simple. There are so few calories in foods that are labeled negative calorie foods, and virtually no fat or carbs, that it is impossible to eat enough to keep gaining weight. How are you going to gain weight every week eating carrotts, celeries, pineapple, apples, blueberries, cabbage, and water? It's not going to happen. In fact, if you had a diet of ONLY negative calorie foods, you would eventually starve to death.

There has been a lot of back and forth on whether negative calorie foods exist, or whether it's all snake oil and wives' tales. One thing I've noticed while doing extensive research is that often times the people who are most adamant that "negative calorie foods" is a stupid concept seem to miss what the actual negative foods concept is about.

Negative calories foods are not foods that don't have calorie. All food has calories of some kind unless it's water. Negative calorie foods are foods belonging to a diet that empahsizes foods that are low in calories, but which the body takes more energy to burn than it receives. The theory is that the normal calorie burn from digesting the food and living a normal life will wipe out the calories eaten from these foods.

For example, if a slice of carrot had 10 calories, but took 12 to burn, that food would have -2 calorie effect on your body. That doesn't mean the carrots are -2 calories, but that the end result of this process is to lose weight. The idea with negative calorie foods, which are always certain types of fruits and veggies and are usually very high in fiber, and have a low number of calories to begin with.

These foods are excellent choices for a diet, since they keep you full, but don't add any calories whatsoever.

I repeat this because it's important: no foods have negative calories. The lowest you can possibly get is zero, which is water. But ice water requires the body to work to warm it up for use, meaning that although the calorie amounts burned are paltry (an estimated 50 calories for the recommended 8 glasses of ice water a day), that still creates a negative calorie effect since your body burned 50 calories to process ice water, which gave back 0 calories.

This is what is meant by "negative calorie foods." A more accurate description might be "Foods low in calories that produce a negative calorie effect because of how much energy it takes to burn them," but that doesn't sound very catchy. Meanwhile the term "negative calorie foods" gets the same idea across.

So as for the argument over whether these technically exist or not, negative calorie foods do what they are supposed to for a negative calorie foods diet: they make you lose weight. That's the entire point, isn't it?

The idea of negative calorie foods works for several reasons, and most of these foods have a few things in common that make this possible:

1) All of these foods are extremely high in fiber. This makes it much easier for your body to digest quickly, and use every nutrient while passing the rest straight on through quickly enough that it can't stick around to become fat.

2) All of these foods are either fruits or veggies. There is no other type of food on this list that falls into another food group. These food groups are commonly the healthiest types of food for you anyway, and almost never have any fat, though there are exceptions (like coconuts, which definitely do NOT make the negative foods list).

3) Most all of these foods will have a high water content. This makes sense since no matter how strong a metabolic effect a food has, the higher in calories it is the harder it will be to burn all of them off. Water has no calories, so fruits and veggies that are particularly high in water will have less calories and thus there is less to burn off while digesting.
